In the summer of 2017, Habitat SKC launched a campaign to maximize the impact that our Neighborhood Revitalization program has in our Neighborhood of Focus – Rainier Valley. The Good Glows Here campaign reinforces our commitment to supporting the health and safety of the Neighborhood of Focus by prioritizing and addressing resident concerns about safety and lighting.
After partnering with the local nonprofit, Homesight, which provides community resources to fixed and low-income residents, we launched a canvassing and survey campaign to get an idea of the areas that residents would most like improved in their neighborhood. Several focus groups later, we were told that increased lighting along the most dangerous streets would hopefully reduce the amount of troubling and criminal activity.
We installed the first batch of lamp posts along Renton Ave. during our month-long event, Women Build, in the month of May. We followed up with a second batch of lamp posts with our Rock the Block event in June. There have been 14 installations of neighborhood lamp posts with more coming via our next Rock the Block event in the spring of 2018. Many of the lamp posts are included in our ongoing repair projects as well. Overall, working with the residents of the Rainier Valley neighborhood to support their community development and aspirations has helped Habitat SKC to deepen our understanding of community needs. We’re eager to continue developing this partnership that works towards reducing displacement and increasing the number of stable homes and communities in the Seattle-King County area.
